About the Artist
Yakime Akelá Brown
Brooklyn - Shaolin - Delaware
Yakime Akelá Brown was born and raised in New York City, spending his formative years between Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York. He currently resides in Bear, Delaware. Growing up in a multicultural community, he was exposed early to diverse artistic expressions. His mother regularly took he and his siblings to museums and galleries, fostering an appreciation for the arts that became a lasting influence. As a youth, Yakime enjoyed drawing and later experimented with spray paint, charcoal, pastels, inks, acrylics, and oils. Although family and friends recognized his talent early on, he did not pursue art professionally until his late 30s.
Art has long served as a form of personal therapy for Yakime. “Painting has such a cathartic effect on me,” he explains. “Whatever emotions I’m experiencing—whether happiness, stress, or frustration—I redirect that energy onto the canvas.” As a self-taught artist Yakime has been painting professionally for well over a decade. In 2009, one of his early works, *Untitled III* (48" × 60", acrylic on canvas), received honorable mention in a juried event judged by the late Delaware artist Edward L. Loper, Sr. This recognition encouraged him to pursue broader opportunities to share his work. His first solo exhibition took place in May 2010 at the now-defunct Artist Haven Gallery in Delaware City, Delaware. Since then, Yakime’s work has been featured in global periodicals, news articles, and exhibited in galleries for solo and group exhibitions across the East and West coasts. His paintings have been acquired by private collectors, law firms, and other regional institutions.
Yakime’s work reflects the vibrancy and energy of his metropolitan upbringing—dynamic, diverse, and textured with an urban edge. His style blends abstract and occasional representational elements, characterized by bold vibrant color, expressive brushwork, jagged palette knife strokes, and layered surfaces. One art blogger described his work as “…a profusion of color and strong brush and palette strokes,” noting the palpable energy within each piece. Yakime favors acrylics for their versatility and typically works on large-scale canvases that, in his words, “…allow me to release my creative energies.” Constantly experimenting with new techniques, he resists being confined to a single style, instead striving to create a diverse body of work that resonates with a wide range of audiences.
Yakime actively gives back to the community. He regularly raffles off a free painting at local art exhibitions and has donated artworks that raised thousands of dollars for causes such as premature birth, infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, and cancer research in Delaware. He also donated a painting to the Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children facility, one that hangs to this day—an achievement he calls one of his proudest moments. In addition, Yakime mentors at-risk youth, coaches aspiring professionals, and volunteers monthly in community service.
Artist Statement
“My artwork is heavily influenced by elements of nature, fluidity, motion, and kinetic energy often expressed through swirling, water-like forms, splashes, and symbols or letters that appear to flow through space. My love of typography stems from my early graffiti writing days, while my 40+ years as a DJ and lifelong exposure to music also shape my creative process. Depending on my mood, I paint while listening to deep house, drum & bass, or jazz—or sometimes in silence for a more immersive experience. Painting is deeply personal and cathartic, allowing me to channel emotions such as joy, stress, or frustration onto the canvas.
I use brushes, palette knives, scraping tools and other implements to build vibrant color and rich texture, often finishing pieces with glossy epoxy resin. Texture and dimensionality are essential to my work, which is why photographs and prints rarely capture the full impact—the raised strokes, ridges, and knife marks are meant to be experienced in person. My goal is for viewers not only to see the work but to feel its energy and emotional presence.
Ultimately, I hope my art sparks memories or emotions in the viewer. While some people deeply connect with it and others may not, I believe art is subjective—something you either appreciate or you don’t. I avoid over-analyzing art and see it simply as a matter of personal taste. Regardless of interpretation, I create because art is an essential part of who I am.”
